Five Ways to Not Lose Your Mind During the Apocalypse

If you are finding yourself at home more than usual it can be maddening especially after being cooped up through the winter. Corina and I are coming to grips with the full impact of the loss of our weekly routine (toddler library programs, swimming at AU, grocery shopping) and are starting to look for creative alternatives to the outings we normally use to fill the space and use up time until our lives are over.

Number One

Build a gigantic fort!

Nothing takes me back to childhood like a good old fashioned blanket fort. Even as an adult I can get so caught up and hyper-focused on cotton engineering that I forget to drink and eat. Plus it's fun for Corina too. The best part is that now that I'm a grown-up I can use whatever tools and fabric I want!

Step one: Gather your supplies. We used clothes pins, office clips, tacks, safety pins and twine. You will also need fabric. We used sheets, curtains, blankets and an assortment of silk scarves. We never throw away sheets here so that we always have a stash of tent making materials.

Step two: Gather some useful furniture and think about placement. We used the chairs and tables from a patio dining set. If you are okay with putting tacks in your wall choose a corner so you can utilize the wall to hang sheets. We picked an area of our house that we don't use often so that we can keep it up for a long time.

Step three: Construct! Don't forget to add entrance tunnels! This adds quite a bit of fun and privacy inside the tent as well.

Step four: Decorate. We added a sofa made of pillows and blanket carpeting.  You may also want to set up a kitchen or dining area or animal hospital like we've done in the past.

Placement by the window adds a nice element of natural light during the day. We plan to bring in a lamp tonight as the sun sets.

We later filled the fort with all of our stuffed animals for company and further decor.

Stay tuned! More tomorrow.
