Last Burdock Show

What can I say about this show, the snow made a mess of things, a band had to cancel and some people I invited or hoped would come stayed home, which was totally cool it was pretty terrible outside, and of course proverbial stuff and things happen. Good folks and friends turned up, kicked their boots and hung their coats.  We provided nachos with all the proper fixings, and the night proceeded. The lineup was a warm intimate mix of acoustic guitar, ambient abysmal soundscapes, and rock n roll. At one point during the show I was alone in the kitchen drinking some Wisconsin beer, generous compliments of Madison musician Bob Loblaw. The hallway bridging the kitchen and show space was being blasted by a two piece band called The States. I had seen them play at a couple different shows, they have a really solid sound and it was rattling my empty can. Another beer and handful of nachos later I walked back to the show space and watched the rest of the show with a head bobbing crowd.

So the turn out was a bit sparse, it was maybe the first time I had ever really witnessed an empty kitchen where there would usually be a handful of people engaging in a day story, philosophical debate,  or just listening to the music that was playing. It really wasn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things, we just had a few more leftovers than we would have at its higher volume, and people played it safe staying off the arctic roads, thats just fine decent. For everyone who showed up it was awesome great to share love with you, and all the friends and family who didn't make it out, I love you and can't wait to see you soon.

When the show comes down to some kind of retrospect , the burdock house is more than just entertainment and a show space, its the place we can turn to that has love to give and share, its spirit radiates and envelopes us with its energy. The spirit of love is breathing in jokes, songs, tears, awkward conversations, wisdom, fuckups, off days, the spirit is planting seeds that will grow and die. Our struggles, coping mechanisms, pain, blessings, and just simply trying our best with the conditions we are given are playing part in eventual harvest that will keep going into forever, we will create, share and continue to love.

Though we plan to continue with open mics and other events (maybe including occasional acoustic shows), Jan 12 2019 was the night of our last electric show. Shows no longer seem like the best way of achieving most of the goals (meeting like-minded people, building community, sharing ideas, etc) we had for them. More urgently, our 18-month baby needs to be able to relax in the evenings and she is much too curious to sleep, even at 1am, when there's interesting folks making noise! So, its time to move on. We are excited to free up the time and energy spent on shows for a new project(s)...stay tuned!
